20210520-9R6A3536-768x512Multiple sclerosis, more commonly referred to as MS, is a disease of the central nervous system which is composed of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Nerve fibers are surrounded by a protective material called myelin. MS occurs when the immune system attacks the myelin, damaging it as well as the nerve fibers it protects. This attack disrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and the body, causing problems with vision, balance, and muscle control. The name multiple sclerosis comes from the scar tissue that develops around the damaged nerve fibers. There are four basic courses that MS generally takes:

  • Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS)
  • Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS)
  • Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS)
  • Primary Progressive MS (PPMS)

Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis

The signs of MS can vary from person to person as well as throughout the course of the disease. The location of the affected nerve fibers also contributes to the manifestation and severity of symptoms. Symptoms include:

  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty Speaking
  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Tremor
  • Blurred Vision
  • Double Vision
  • Stiff Muscles
  • Thinking & Memory Issues

Cause of Multiple Sclerosis

The direct cause of MS remains unknown. Scientists believe that genetics and environmental factors are responsible for activating this disease. Continuous studies of immunology, epidemiology, genetics, and infectious agents are contributing to gaining more insight into what causes MS.

Treatment for Multiple Sclerosis

There is currently no cure for multiple sclerosis. Ongoing research has enabled the development of several effective treatments to alleviate symptoms and slow the progression of this disease. More than a dozen treatments exist to:

  • Manage Relapses
  • Alleviate Symptoms
