Barbecued Spare Ribs

Experience the bold flavors of these barbecued spare ribs, where the sweet kick of the rub meets the depth of a tangy sauce.

Rub:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper

Sauce:

  • 8 oz no-salt-added tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

Directions:

  1. Brush ribs with vinegar.
  2. Mix the ingredients together and rub into ribs.
  3. Smoke or grill until done.
  4. While ribs are cooking, combine sauce ingredients.
  5. Brush with sauce during the last half hour of cooking.

Yield: 4 servings

Tip: Cooking the ribs most of the way with just a spice rub and then “mopped” with sauce near the end

helps to keep the meat from getting too dried out.
